Foundation, the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, and the NIH.

Activities in relation to the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy:
The AES is working on an external communications strategy. We hope that we will be able to identify strategies that will support the Global Campaign.

Summary statement:

  • The AES would like to publicly thank and recognize the many dedicated and committed volunteers who make things happen in AES. In addition, the strong partnership enjoyed with our corporate sponsors is extremely important to AES. From the successful exhibit hall to year-round educational activities, AES corporate sponsors are an important part of the team.
  • AES partnership philosophy extends to relationship with other professional organizations. AES has developed a formal collaboration that includes both the American Academy of Neurology and the Epilepsy Foundation. AES always enjoyed a strong partnership with EF and continue to look for ways to leverage both organizations' resources in the most effective and efficient way. Our collaborative efforts extended this year to include the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) and Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) as we jointly supported the White House initiated conference produced by the National Institutes of Neurologi'cal Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).
  • During 1999 AES continued to refine programs for research and for epilepsy clinicians, And now support graduate students proposing research projects in epilepsy. AES has renewed support for AES research grants and fellowships, and have established a new collaborative research initiative grant to encourage pilot projects in basic or clinical areas involving more than one institution and more than one AES member. Education has been a key strategic goal for the Society. AES support and sponsor educational conferences throughout the year in all regions of the country; main educational vehicle remains the Annual Meeting. The Society recently received the highest level of CME certification. This year AES has initiated several programs for epilepsy clinicians. Along with the practice management column in AES News there was a course on managing epilepsy practice at the Annual Meeting. Some key AES proceedings and programs have been posted on the Web site.
  • AES are developing a Epilepsy Patient Information Center (EPIC) database for care of patients with epilepsy. EPIC should facilitate tracking of seizure patients in clinic and in drug studies, and it should facilitate generation of Medicare-compliant notes.
  • A new AES-supported clinical trials consortium has been organized. The consortium will initiate an inaugural trial of a drug to treat infantile spasms.
  • Fundraising for research and selection of research grants for funding has long been a joint activity of AES and EF. This year AES initiated a new joint program designed to educate epilepsy care professionals on issues of epilepsy and employment.
  • The AES is experiencing a wonderful period of growth and vitality. Both Susan Spencer, President 2000 and Bob Fisher, the President during 1999 have set in motion new initiatives and new ideas drawn from a very comprehensive strategic plan.
