Meetings:
A symposium on "Epilepsy in Childhood and Elderly" was
held at 8-10 June 1999 with 300 participants. Problems in diagnosis
and treatment in elderly population and childhood epilepsies which
are resistant to antiepileptic drugs were the main topics of the
meeting and discussed by invited guests and our colleagues.
Monthly conferences which continued to be held focused on genetic
epilepsies this year. Four conferences were given alternating with
case discussions every month.
Global Campaign in Türkiye:
Last year 2nd week of June was accepted as "Week of Epilepsy"
in Türkiye by Ministry of Health and was declared during the 1st
National Congress. A meeting for patients and their parents was
organized during this week in Istanbul to give information about
the disease.
Commission of education planned series of seminars targeted to
school teachers and patient caregivers and prepared videotapes and
handouts to be showed and distributed during the meetings. A pilot
study will start in Istanbul and the written text will able to be
reached from internet soon.
Other news:
A computer data base program (EPIBASE) for epilepsy which was prepared
and distributed nationwide under the sponsorship of a pharmaceutical
company to the interested neurologists, was started to be used and
the results collected from different centres were published in the
format of a newsletter to be repeated thrice a year to stimulate
the usage of the program as well as to provide help to the performing
physicians. The main goal was to collect the patient data in a standardized
way which will give rise to analysis and interpretation of the information
and offer the physician to have a standardized approach to the epileptic
patient.
Commission for genetics was established and started to meet every
month to discuss the families and to work on projects in collaboration
with groups from foreign countries.
Homepage at the internet for Turkish Epilepsy Society was inaugurated
and can be reached at: http://www.turkepilepsi.org.tr
A prize of 40.000 FF was given to support a basic science project
in epilepsy under the sponsorship of a pharmaceutical company .
The winners will present the results of their study during our 2nd.
National Congress this June.
