During year 1999, the Senegalese
League Against Epilepsy has developed activities which has been
managed by the Commission of Training and Research, the Secretariat,
and the Socio-Educative Commission. The Secretariat's Office of
the SLAE has been organized to receive now people for information.
A local company has offered to the SLAE a computer. SLAE has also
received donations from philanthropic persons.
Activities related to
the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy:
The SLAE has been officially appointed -with Zimbabwe- to be a pilot
country for a Demonstration Project on Epilepsy in Africa. Meetings
have been organized to prepare the Action Plan in Geneva in April
1999, and, locally, with the Ministry of Health. The draft of the
Protocol of demonstration project has been produced and is on discussion
locally and with the Global Campaign Board.
Other activities:
- In coordination with Socio-Educative
Commission and Research and Training Commission, a very successful
training for school teachers has been organized in June 1999. The
trainees have demonstrated a strong enthusiasm and received documents
for their lessons to alumni.
- A research program has
been conducted on the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of School
teachers in the Dakar Region. It just has ended and the results
will be published.
- A research on Partial Epilepsy
has been started in 1999 and will lead to a medical Thesis during
year 2000.
- SLAE has participated to
meeting on "Treatment gap" which was held in Marrakech
(Morocco), in May 1 and 2 1999. On "Status epilepticus"
in Geneva, May 20 1999. And to Prague International meeting on Epilepsy
with a communication on "Global Campaign Activities In Africa
: Why ?" by Pr Diop.
Information:
An International Meeting
"Epilepsy: A Healthcare Priority in Africa" has been organized
in Dakar, Senegal on May 4 - 7, 2000, gathering delegates from every
African country, WHO, WHO/Afro, and the Boards of ILAE, IBE, and
Global Campaign "Epilepsy out of the Shadows". One of
the goals will be to produce an African Declaration on Epilepsy".
