Meetings an educational activities:
Meeting with Dr. Med. J. J_drejczak and Prof. J. Majkowski as guest
lecturers (topics: „Differential Diagnosis of Pseudoepileptic Seizures"
and „The Place of Vigabatrin in the Treatment of Epilepsy").
Activities in relation to Global Campaign Against Epilepsy:
A radio program about epilepsy was broadcast and a discussion about
rehabilitation in epileptology was published in press. Members of
the chapter are involved in the activities of the ILAE Commission
on European Affairs: Subcommission for Eastern Europe, and EUREPA.
Different educational activities took place in 1999:
- two educational courses in pediatric epileptology
- two in clinical electrophysiology (with special emphasis on epilepsy)
for neurologists and pediatric neurologists (two weeks duration
each).
- Education on epilepsy has been included into the postgraduate
training program for general practitioners and pediatricians.
- The project „Comprehensive Care for Children With Epilepsy in
Lithuania" aimed mostly at educational and psychosocial issues
was prepared in 1998 as a part of the Global Campaign Against Epilepsy.
It received a grant from the Open Society Fund - Lithuania. In the
course of 1999 the project activities included:
- training of medical staff at centers abroad (Denmark and Germany)
- translation of educational material for patients and families,
and of special literature for professionals
- preparation of computerized database of childhood epilepsy
- elaboration of educational program for patients and families.
Other activities:
The Society has 94 members, mainly medical doctors. Our aim for
the future is to involve more paramedical staff (nurses, psychologists,
social workers).
A meeting on multiprofessional topics of psychosocial problems
and legal issues in epilepsy is planned for 2000.
Members of the Society are involved in research on QOL of families
of children with epilepsy and on idiopathic syndromes in childhood.
They also take active part in decision-making processes initiated
by Health Ministry concerning the availability of new AEDs, and
the organization of health relevant issues for people with epilepsy.
