Summary statement
In 1999, the Italian League Against Epilepsy (LICE) lost its
Past-President, Prof. Claudio Munari, who died on October 3rd, 1999.
This is a painful loss for epileptologists all over the world. The
new Board, elected in the month of June, will carry forward the
initiatives proposed by Claudio Munari: direct co-operation with
the other national scientific societies (neuroradiology, neurosurgery,
neuropsychology, etc.); organising meetings during national congresses;
optimising the knowledge of all component of an epileptologic team
(EEG technicians, neuropsychologists, etc.); organising advanced
courses like, for example, that on video-EEG, and the Annual Courses
held in Gargnano.
LICE also awards fellowships to encourage the training of neurosurgeons
who want to specialize in the surgical treatment of epilepsy. The
collection of epidemiological data continues in Italy with the Episcreen
project that involves about 80 centres for the treatment of epilepsy.
Seminars with patients on both scientific and social topics have
been organized together with the non-medical Italian Association
against Epilepsy.
LICE is also involved in the organization of the forthcoming 4th
European Congress on Epileptology that will be held in Florence,
7-12 October 2000. This will be an opportunity for a meeting of
great scientific value in a wonderful city. We hope a large number
of delegates will attend.
