Summary Statement: The Austrian chapter now
has 223 members. Comprehensive epilepsy centers have been established
in several major cities in Austria which offer all aspects of medical
and surgical epilepsy treatment. The annual meeting was held together
with the German and Swiss chapter of the International League against
Epilepsy from March 18-21, 1999 in Vienna. It is planned to join
the meetings of these three German speaking chapters in the future
every two years to encourage mutual exchange on all aspects of epilepsy.
The Vienna conference attracted over 800 participants and was attended
also by renowned international experts in the field of epilepsy.
Several other conferences were held under the patronage of the Austrian
Chapter including a state of the art conference on epilepsy and
pregnancy in Vienna. The Austrian chapter also organized several
activities during the 'Year of the Brain' ('Jahr des Gehirns') held
in Austria in 1999 to increase the awareness on epilepsy in the
general population including a press conference in Vienna in October.
Furthermore, a brochure on epilepsy was published and circulated
to neurologists, pediatricians, general practitioners and physicians
of other specialties to be distributed to their patients. The Austrian
chapter joined Eurepa in 1999 and will participate in further activities.
