Martin Brodie is Professor of Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology
at Glasgow University and Clinical and Research Director of the
Epilepsy Unit in the University Department of Medicine and Therapeutics
at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland. He was born in Glasgow
immediately after the second world war and attended Hutchesons’
Boys’ Grammar School. He spent much of his school years playing
chess and became a Scottish international before the rigours of
medical school and financial penury made him focus on his career.
After qualifying, he trained in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics
initially in Glasgow and later at the Royal Postgraduate Medical
School in London. He returned to Scotland in 1981 and set up the
Epilepsy Unit the following year.
Martin is happily married to Carol. They have three children and
two grandchildren (so far), a dog (Hamish) and a cat (Dennis) The
family lives in a small village beneath the Campsie Fells in scenic
Stirlingshire. Martin’s hobbies include drinking cask strength single
malt whisky, reading novels and biographies, and falling asleep
watching sport on television. His major aim is to work in a national
epilepsy centre in an independent Scotland.
